How Large Will the WSOP Main Event Field Be This Year?

WSOP 2011 ChipsIn 2010, 7,319 players turned out for the World Series of Poker main event. This was the second highest turnout in the history of the event, topped only by 2006 (8,773 players).

There was no reason to think that the 2011 field wouldn't top last year's field, especially given the continued expansion of poker into international markets.

That was, of course, until "Black Friday".

American players won't be able to win WSOP main event seats on sites such as Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker this year, and this is going to dramatically cut the size of the main event field. Many casual US players qualified for the World Series of Poker main event in the past through online satellites.

The size of this year's main event field has been the subject of much debate ever since "Black Friday". The general consensus seems to be that between 5000-5500 players will end up turning out for this year's main event.

Bodog has set the line at 5250 players:

"2011 WSOP Main Event - How may players will play in the 2011 WSOP main event?"

Over 5250, -120
Under 5250, -120

I like the over..
