Jimmy "Gobboboy" Fricke must be starting to really like Australia.
Last year he came in second to Gus Hansen in the main event of the Aussie Millions, winning $800k AUD. He put on a tremendous display of poker skill, bull-dozing through the final two tables of the tournament before succumbing to Gus Hansen.
This year Fricke has gotten his Australian trip off to a fantastic start after taking down event #3 of the Aussie Millions. It was a $550 buy-in 7 Card Stud / 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo / Razz tournament. There were a total of 96 entries making for a prize pool of $48,000 Australian dollars.
Fricke absolutely dominated play once they got down to three tables, and he never looked back. At the final table, Fricke continued to pad his chip lead, and was never in any danger of relinquishing it. At one point, with four people left in the tournament, Fricke had 262k in chips, and his remaining three opponents had 68k, 28k and 22k. This was truly a dominating performance, and "Gobboboy" capped it off by eliminating the final three players himself. Second place finisher Graeme Putt was hopelessly outchipped once they entered heads-up play and really had no chance of winning.
Fricke earned $16,800 AUD for his first place finish, plus an "Aussie Millions" trophy for his mantlepiece. The money isn't as important to Fricke as the title is, especially after coming so close in last year's Main Event. Now that "Gobboboy" has his first victory at the Aussie Millions, he'll certainly be looking for more. Given the amount of confidence that he likely has right now, he will certainly be considered one of the favorites to win the Aussie Millions main event.
