Gus Hansen is proving that he is an adaptable poker player. Previously known for being extremely loose, Hansen played a fairly tight final table at the Aussie Millions and ended up taking down the $1.5 million dollar first prize, bettering a large field and a final table that included Andrew Black, Kristy Gazes and "Gobboboy" Jimmy Fricke.
Initially it looked as though "Gobboboy" was going to run away with the event, as he was absolutely pushing around the table as it got to 4- and 5-handed play. Fricke played smart poker, but also got extremely lucky numerous times throughout the tournament, and eventually succumbed to Hansen in heads-up play.
Hansen played a superb tournament, and completely outplayed Fricke heads-up. The final hand came with Hansen held AA and Fricke held an open-ended straight draw, and the pocket rockets held up. Fricke started heads-up play with a huge chiplead, but the more-experienced Hansen whittled that lead down and eventually took the lead.
One of the more impressive hands in heads-up play was when Hansen called Fricke's all-in holding AK on a board of 10 10 J. Fricke held KQ, but ended up making a straight on the river.
Hats off to Gus Hansen. He played a superb tournament and certainly deserved to win.
