Cantu Has Been Involved in Three Major Altercations So FarPublished on 2014-06-21 18:51:00
It would not be a day at the World Series of Poker without a Brandon Cantu altercation.
Brandon Cantu, who owns two World Series of Poker bracelets and over $4 million in live tournament cashes, is not exactly the most popular guy at the World Series of Poker. The Brandon Cantu inspired fun has ranged from allegations of angle shooting to allegations of not paying back loans to alleged physical confrontations.
Early in the 2014 World Series of Poker, multiple people claimed that Jeff Lisandro and Brandon Cantu had engaged in a "fist fight" in a hallway. Jeff Lisandro gave his side of the story:
Lisandro claimed that he had vouched for Cantu for a loan and Cantu had not paid it back. Cantu never publicly gave his side of the story on this one.
The second incident involving Brandon Cantu occurred a few days ago in the $1,500 Dealer's Choice Six-Max event.
Cantu was involved in a hand with Matt Szymaszek. Cantu thought that Szymaszek had checked and Cantu started to turn his hand over, while Szymaszek denied having checked. According to Jesse Martin, who is a friend of Szymaszek, Cantu started screaming and accusing Szymaszek of angle shooting. Martin immediately started yelling at Cantu, claiming that it was Cantu, in fact, that was an angle shooter. The altercation allegedly became physical after Cantu charged at Martin. Cantu was given a penalty and was allowed to remain in the event, much to the chagrin of many other players.
Here is Jesse Martin's take on what happened:
Here is Brandon Cantu's take:
It's safe to say that you would be hard pressed to find anybody willing to take Cantu's side in this conflict.
Finally, yet another person that Cantu accused of shooting an angle - Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck:
Here is what Mayrinck had to say via her Twitter account:
"The worst moment of my poker career was today in front of a complete scum bag who accused ME of angling. Brian Cantu THE ANGLER. #DIESOON"
That's three altercations involving Brandon Cantu and the World Series of Poker is just barely half over.
Some people believe that Cantu deserves to be banned from the World Series of Poker due to his behavior, but nothing has happened as of yet.
