World Series of Poker Kicks Off on Sunday
 |

The World Series of Poker just seems to grow in popularity. In 2003, when Chris Moneymaker won the main event, there were less than 1000 entrants in the main event. This year, due to poker's continued exploding popularity, it is estimated that there will be over 8,000 people playing in the main event. The allure is obvious. Not only do you get a shot at playing for a 10 million dollar first place prize, but you get a good chance of being on TV in front of millions of people on ESPN, plus you get to play alongside poker greats such as Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth. One other thing: celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Jennifer Tilly and James Woods are also expected to play in the event. Now you can see why 8k+ people are expected to play in the main event this year.
However, the main event doesn't start until July 28th. Up until then, there will be a plethora of other events, covering the entire spectrum of different poker games. The World Series of Poker this year is offering Pot Limit Omaha, Pot Limit Hold'em, H.O.R.S.E., 2-7 Draw; you name it, they are offering it this year.
Favorites to win the World Series of Poker main event this year? To me, the favorite is Greg Raymer, followed by Phil Ivey and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. Anybody who makes it through this grueling 2 week long event will surely earn the $10 million dollar payday.
